FAQs for booking trains from Venice to Bologna

Is the train from Venice to Bologna scenic?

Trains from Venice to Bologna take you though some of Italy’s richest and most productive farmland – one of the reasons that Bologna is the gastronomic capital of Italy. As you leave the coast, you pass through flat countryside dotted with Italy’s most iconic tree – the tall, slender cypress. This area is famous for its rice, and according to the time of year, you may see rice paddies full of bright, fresh, green rice plants, rippling gently in the breeze. Travelling by rail from Venice to Bologna follows a line that passes through Padua, where there is a short stop. Padua is a gem of an historic city; look out for the river and the formal gardens of the villas on the outskirts, with their gravelly paths, parterres and immaculately clipped box hedges. As the train carries on towards Bologna, the landscape is still primarily flat and agricultural, with rice giving way to crops of wheat and maize. As you approach Bologna, you may be able to catch sight of the foothills of the Apennines in the distance, making a hilly backdrop to the honey-coloured terracotta roofs and towers of the city.

What services are available at Venice Santa Lucia Station?

Santa Lucia Station is on the Grand Canal, with a water-bus stop right outside the station exit. There are steps down from the station, but there is also a sloping walkway down the side of the steps for wheeled luggage and wheelchairs. Between the main entrance and the platform, there is a large, ground-floor gallery of small, mostly designer-brand shops selling souvenirs, gifts, clothes, jewellery and toiletries. There is also a food court and a pizzeria for refreshments, but don’t forget that Venice is an expensive city and station prices are above average (even for Venice), so possibly bring a snack and drink with you during your travel from Venice to Bologna. The station offers all the usual facilities, such as a left luggage concession and assistance for passengers. The assistance service is provided by the Sala Blu organisation. Make sure you contact Sala Blu by phone or online a few hours before you intend to travel, to book the assistance you require.
